I’ve been telling myself that I’m going to spend more time coding, but it’s hard to make the time for working on code when you work with computers all day. So, I’m deciding to force it upon myself to code for 100 days straight. No matter how much or how little I do, I’m going to be doing something to advance my software development skills, whether it be learning a new editor, language/framework, or architecting some infrastructure in the cloud to make use the fun stuff I’m building.

Work/Life Balance

I had an upgrade for a customer this past Tuesday, and since that upgrade there's really been a lot of things I'm excited to get involved with at work in terms of development. One great thing about working at a software company is that there's plenty of room for work to be done & improvement to be made. Whether it's development, process automation, improving monitoring/visibility, training... there's plenty of great and fun projects to get involved with where one feels like they're making an impact on the company long-term & making life easier for our coworkers. From people I've spoken with in the industry, it makes a lot of sense to get involved with these things, but it's also very important to make sure we're handling a reasonable workload to maintain a work/life life/work balance.

The Pheonix Project: A Novel about IT, DevOps, and Helping Your Business Win

Finally finished “The Pheonix Project” a little over a week ago. Although I haven’t read much this year with my customer go-live in April, it was definitely the best book I’ve read in a while. For comparison, the other books I’ve read recently consist of Alice in Wonderland, The Martian, and Ready Player One… so maybe I just needed something a bit more technology-focused… who knows.
